We have observed once or twice before that, at this point, President Obama seems to be trolling his opposition.

Daily Kos: In 2012, minorities waited twice as long to vote as whites. GOP unsure that's a problem.

Posted: 06 Feb 2013 06:58 AM PST

The governments of the states in question (and other states with strong rural-urban voting disparities, like effing Ohio, the Florida of the midwest) don't necessarily think it's a problem if certain people have to wait a long, long time to vote and others don't. It may be "very easily handled", as Grassley says, but that only further highlights how very, very invested certain groups are in conspicuously not fixing it. In states like Virginia, in fact, they're still trying their level best to make sure certain people don't have to wait in long lines to vote by making sure certain people aren't allowed to vote at all.

Racialized stereotypes about normative black and Latino gender roles also place trans youth at high risk, both on the streets and in schools. The brutal 2008 murder of gender non-conforming teen Lawrence King by a male student at an Oxnard middle school shone a national spotlight on transphobia and violence. But the fact that King was a working-class boy of color, possibly grappling with racist cultural misperceptions about what his "rightful" gender identity should be, was not examined in mainstream discussions about the tragedy. The 2009 suicides of Carl Walker Hoover and Jaheem Herrera, eleven-year-old boys of color who had been harassed at school because they were suspected of being gay did not make headlines. At the same time, bullying-related suicides involving white gay youth were more widely publicized and seized on as national calls to action.[xiv]

Captain Harlock: "The sea of space is my sea" | MetaFilter

Posted: 04 Feb 2013 05:48 AM PST

Not much is known about the forthcoming Captain Harlock movie, except budgeted at $30 million, the most expensive ever in Toei Animation, a vague Fall 2013 release date for Japan, and a few of the people slated to be involved. The 45 second teaser trailer is the first official public clip, though clips from a 2010 pilot were shown first at Tokyo's International Anime Fair in 2010, which has a strict no photo policy. A 3:22 long camera recorded trailer clip was posted online in 2010, which might have been (one of) the clip(s) shown at early previews. Leiji Matsumoto's official Japanese website is dated, and the most recent Harlock press release from Toei Animation is from 2010, so the future of Harlock is fairly vague at the moment.

Daily Kos: Neal Boortz, his death is on your head

Posted: 03 Feb 2013 08:15 PM PST

There is a narrative that runs pervasively through the conservative movement that combines the diseased threads of racism, worship of Ayn Rand, hatred of the social safety net, and gun fetishism. In this narrative, the violent and delinquent "takers" in minority urban communities are rendered lazy by the crippling dependency engendered by the modern form of slavery known as the social safety net, which is funded mainly by the "makers" in white suburbia. But when the takers start to outnumber the makers, as Paul Ryan likes to say, then there won't be enough money to fund the entitlement checks. When this happens, the social order will break down, and the desperate people of the urban inner city will invade white suburbia, which will have to defend itself and, in the words of Neal Boortz, litter the landscape with dead urban thugs.

The event features Omar Barghouti, BDS co-founder and Judith Butler, prominent philosopher. The college has come under widespread attack for its hosting of the event, with a coalition of New York City councillors threatening to defund the school.

Rosa Parks, Revisited - NYTimes.com

Most of what you think you know about Rosa Parks may well be wrong. On the verge of the 100th anniversary of her birth this Monday comes a fascinating new book, "The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks," by Jeanne Theoharis, a Brooklyn College professor. It argues that the romanticized, children's-book story of a meek seamstress with aching feet who just happened into history in a moment of uncalculated resistance is pure mythology. As Theoharis points out, "Rosa's family sought to teach her a controlled anger, a survival strategy that balanced compliance with militancy."
